THE HISTORY OF THE GOLDEN SPRING WESLEYAN HOLINESS CHURCH
The Golden Spring Wesley Holiness Church came into existence in the year 2004. The late Rev. Sedley Hessing had a great vision for church planting and passion for the souls of men. A few years before Golden Spring came into being, Rev. Hessing started a Sunday school in Waterford, Portmore under a tree.
This Sunday school consisted of his immediate family, a friend of the family, and some children. After a few months, Rev. Hessing moved the location of that Sunday school to the nearest neighbor’s veranda. This Sunday school grew and we eventually moved to the Waterford Primary School. It was Rev. Hessing’s intention to acquire a piece of land in Portmore to plant a church. However, due to financial constraints, that vision was not realized. Rev. Hessing did not give up on his dreams and visions in planting a new church. In 2003 he purchased a 10-acre property in Golden Spring and with the consent of the then Superintendent Rev. Orrett Field and the church Board; the Golden Spring Wesleyan Holiness Church was built. This project was spearheaded by Rev. Hessing. A Basic school along with a parking lot were also constructed on the property. On Sunday March 21, 2004, and to the Glory of God! We experienced the Grand Opening of the Golden Spring Wesleyan Holiness Church. As the years went by, the Golden Spring Church experienced some uphill challenges, as any new venture in its infant stages would. The Hessing family along with some members within the church body, worked tirelessly. We did house to house visits, distribution of tracts, open-air meetings and regular services. We had people who came out on regular basis, but did not stay. Some of those folks were already members of their churches. God faithfully blessed our church with (2) two new converts in the persons of Bro. Greg Grant and Sis. Andrea Reid. We also had the reception of (2) two other members. Those (4) four precious souls were like (40) forty people put together. Their commitment to God and service was very outstanding. The Golden Spring Church conducted funerals, christenings and weddings. All the wedding receptions were held at our residents at the then 17 Myers Drive, Kingston 8. |
The Hessing’s family was well known and loved by the Golden Spring community and its environs.
The late Rev. Sedley Hessing was known “in the gates” as a very kind and caring pastor. Upon his retirement in 2012, the Golden Spring Church with an additional land space of about a (1/4) quarter of an acre, were handed over to the Superintendent Rev. Orrett Field. The church continued under the leadership of a Special Worker, Brother Kenrick Howell from 2012 to 2015 where it encountered good and challenging times. The membership grew, however, the impact on the immediate community waned. The core doctrine of the Wesleyan Holiness Church was being eroded by some of its members who had left the church during Rev. Hessing’s time and had returned during Br. Howell’s tenue. After Brother Howell left, the church was assigned a new Pastor, Rev. George Lynch who also pastor the Rose Hall Wesleyan Holiness Church. He commenced at the Golden Spring in 2016. Many were the challenges faced by the new Pastor to restore the doctrinal foundation and to bring about a level of discipline in the worship of God. However, there were some, primarily those who left before along with a few others, who resisted this way and chose to depart again. We note, however, that as of April 12, 2022, the church has shown a level of stability and growth, both spiritually and numerically. Some improvements have been made to its flooring, new bathroom facilities, musical instrument and a small building to host a kitchen donated by the Kiwanis Club of Kingston. The basic school is functioning, thus serving the communities around it. Praise God! We are pressing forward for God. 1 Cor. 3:6 states: Paul planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase! To God be All the Gory! |
