About us: In the early 1900, an American missionary, Pastor Channer came to Maryland District, travelled from door to door held meetings and Bible studies agreed with the people to build a church. The idea was well received and Harry Bogle, an ardent member gave a parcel of land on his property for the church to be built. The structure was made from mud and bamboo wicker (thence the term "wackle and daub"). The dirt floor and make-shift benches did not stop the congregants from wearing white clothes and basking in the presence of the Lord. Miracles, signs and wonders were evident and the community came in large numbers to worship and witness the live transformations.
The membership grew and In 1939 a partial concrete structure was erected and called Pilgrim Holiness. Community members call it "Bogle Church" because of its location. The church was the only one of two churches in the community that was known for its output of quality and spirituality; very spiritual and highly respected because of the evident of God's power (that legacy still lives on).
This small and event filled church had members from every household in and around the district, every group was actively involved in soul winning and it was the hub for families. The church name changed from Pilgrim Holiness in 1969 another name changed but still family oriented.
A member of the John Wesley's Wesleyan Holiness Church, Maryland Wesleyan Holiness Church is in a valley with mountaintop presence. For many years we have become the grudge of many churches. We have dominated all the inter-church competitions, Art and Craft, Sports, Bible Quiz, Drama and you name it. Maryland always have a full bus to go to any District event and strived to be early, whether going far or near.
The recruitment of leaders such as current District Superintendent Rev. George Lynch, Rev. Milton East, Lay Preachers Roy Scott Snr. and the late Deacon Cecile Parkes is also a proof of strength for the church thou having changed as the years unfold. Pastor Matilda (Madge) Dobney migrated from Mahoe, Portland served until she retired and migrated in 1977 held the pastorship until Rev. Orrette Field took over from 1977 - 1997. In 1988 he built the present building from foundation and is now modified with a balcony by the late Rev. Leroy McBean in 2011.
Our online presence:
In the year 2008 we were the first church on the Eastern District to livestream our Divine Service over the internet. We took advantage of the two popular streaming services Ustream and Livestream, even thought we had low bandwidth (slow internet speed) members across the diaspora who had internet access were able to watch the services.
